The nineties
Incorporation of Italcontainer Italcontainer was established in 1991 through an agreement between the Istituto Nazionale Trasporti (INT) (National Transport Institute) and Intercontainer.
The purpose was to integrate the national and international container transport market with an intermodal service.
Combined road, rail and sea transport with a streamlined structure providing fast and efficient solutions.
Already by ‘93 the transport operations accomplished by the firm in the previous year were supplemented by regularly scheduled movements. Investments in the first two years were mainly in human resources and technology. With its computerised monitoring network Italcontainer was able to check transport times and reliability and keep its customers promptly informed.
By ‘94 the firm had a comprehensive national container handling system.
In addition to focussing on strengthening the Italian network, together with Intercontainer it developed new international services and in particular towards Belgium, Spain, Scandinavia and CIS countries in close cooperation with ports, dry ports/logistics centres and inland terminals.
Between ‘95 and ‘96 Italcontainer developed a structure comprising 12 agencies.
By ‘97 the firm had 80 employees and during ‘98 further increased the scheduled transport sector. In‘99 it invested in the block train service for carrying large containers to and from ports.
The new millennium
The challenge in the new millennium is to maintain and develop the intermodal solution.
Italcontainer is countering the recession of the first few years, keeping the service level constant by inserting new projects and improving the organizational and commercial definition of the basic products it supplies.
This has resulted in a close-knit network of rail connections to and from the main Italian ports. An integrated truck/rail transport system, terminal services and an efficient container transport service between Italian and European stations.
With an eye to the future Italcontainer is counting on an effective action in commercial and organizational terms of the intermodal service with longer and heavier trains, agreements with terminals for the entry and exit of the trains and the availability of dedicated wagons/cars.
Our aim is constant cooperation with ship owners, forwarding agents and road haulage contractors to improve the service and productivity
